Theoretical and experimental study of the effects of spray inclination on two-phase spray cooling and critical heat flux

چکیده
Experiments were conducted with PF-5052 liquid sprays impacting a 1.0 1.0 cm heated test surface at different inclination angles, flow rates, and subcoolings. Inclination angle had no noticeable effect on the single-phase or two-phase regions of the boiling curve. Maximum CHF was always achieved with the spray impinging normal to the test surface; increasing angle of inclination away from the normal decreased CHF appreciably. Video analysis showed inclined sprays produced lateral liquid film flow towards the farthest downstream region of the test surface. The film liquid provided partial resistance to dryout despite the weak volumetric spray flux in the downstream region. A new theoretical model of the spray’s impact area and volumetric flux proves this decrease is the result of a sharp reduction in the fraction of the test surface area that is directly impacted by the spray. Combining the model and video results with a previous point-based CHF correlation for normal sprays is shown to accurately predict the effects of orientation angle on CHF for different nozzles and operating conditions. 2007 Elsevier Ltd. A Systematic Approach to Predicting Critical Heat Flux for Inclined Sprays
This study provides a new systematic approach to predicting the effects of spray inclination on critical heat flux (CHF). Experiments were performed with three pressure spray nozzles over a broad range of inclination angles at five flow rates and subcoolings of 15°C and 25°C. These experiments also included high-speed video analysis of spray formation, impact, and recoil for a 1.0 1.0 cm2 test ...
متن کاملIhtc14-22515 Experimental Characterization of Single and Multiple Droplet Impingement on Surfaces Subject to Constant Heat Flux Conditions
Spray cooling is one of the most promising technologies in applications which require large heat removal capacity in very small areas. Previous experimental studies have suggested that one of the main mechanisms of heat removal in spray cooling is forced convection with strong mixing due to droplet impingement. These mechanisms have not been completely understood mainly due to the large number ...
متن کاملEffects of high subcooling on two-phase spray cooling and critical heat flux
Experiments were performed with FC-77 using three full-cone spray nozzles to assess the influence of subcooling on spray performance and critical heat flux (CHF) from a 1.0 1.0 cm test surface. The relatively high boiling point of FC-77 (97 C at one atmosphere) enabled testing at relatively high levels of subcooling. Increasing the subcooling delayed the onset of boiling but decreased the slope...
متن کاملOptimizing and Predicting CHF in Spray Cooling of a Square Surface
Spray cooling of a hot surface was investigated to ascertain the effect o f nozzle-tosurface distance on critical heat flux ( CHF). Full cone sprays of Fluorinert FC-72 and FC-87 were used to cool a 12.7 X 12. 7 mm 2 surface. A theoretical model was constructed that accurately predicts the spray's volumetric flux (liquid volume per unit area per unit time) distribution across the heater surface...

Cryogen spray cooling (CSC) is used to protect the epidermis during dermatologic laser surgery. To date, the relative influence of the fundamental spray parameters on surface cooling remains incompletely understood. This study explores the effects of mass flow rate and average droplet velocity on the surface heat flux during CSC. It is shown that the effect of mass flow rate on the surface heat...
